Man-made underground passage in An Ghairfeanaigh

Situated about 8m from the W bank of the Garfinny river, in fairly marshy land, this site consists of a long mound, 5.4m N-S x 2.5m E-W, within which is a drystone-built chamber which opens off its S end. The chamber measures at least 2.7m in length x .53m in width, and it is roofed by a series of large slabs at a height of c. 1m above the floor; the N end of the chamber is blocked by collapse. An opening or vent in the roof measures .2 x .15m. The side walls are continued beyond the entrance for 1.8m, this section being unroofed. The above description is derived from J.
