Two grass-choked stone rings sit inside a larger fort on the eastern slope of Sugarloaf hill, facing each other across a narrow strip of earth. The western chamber measures four metres wide and keeps its entrance tilted toward the southeast, while the eastern partner has surrendered most of its shape to decay. Together they suggest a small domestic experiment rather than a grand ceremonial building, perhaps a kitchen, a workshop or a seasonal shelter for people watching the valley below. The precision of their alignment remains more striking than the loss of their walls.
Circular univallate ringfort KE043-180---- is situated on the E slopes of Sugarloaf hill, overlooking the lower Garfinny valley and Trabeg.
The 2 circular hut-sites in the interior lie in an E-W line across the centre. Both are enclosed by banks of grass-grown stone collapse and only very short sections of the inner and outer wall-faces are visible. The W hut (KE043-180001-) is 4m in diameter internally and the enclosing bank is up to 1.5m high. The entrance faces SE.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 567. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
