Man-made underground passage in Aghalattafraal,derrylurgan

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Derrylurgan rath in County Cavan still holds two shallow scars where an underground passage may have cut through solid earth. One gap faces north, the other northeast, both wide enough for a person to crawl through darkness. Perhaps they dug the tunnel to hide during storms or keep warm when winter bit hard. The soil has swallowed the entrance, but the shape of the holes still points to human hands reaching into the ground.
At Aghalattafraal/Derrylurgan rath (CV032-001001-). Two depressions in the interior probably mark the site of a Man-made underground passage. The first is at N. It is almost V-shaped in plan (dims. 7m NNW-SSE; 6.6m ENE-WSW). The second is at NE and is somewhat similar in plan (dims. 9.5m NE-SW; 5.8m W-SE). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
