West of the rath bank, a three-metre depression still shadows the entrance to two stone chambers that people walked through mid-century before somebody blocked the passage for good. The 1916 map named it without apology, drawing a line through the earth as if underground rooms were ordinary in County Mayo. Maybe they were. Maybe the rath breathed downward in winter and the chambers kept the heat. Now the hole sits empty in the grass, waiting for someone brave enough to dig or obedient enough to leave it be.

In the W half of a rath (MA082-015001-). A ‘Man-made underground passage’ is indicated in the centre of the W half of the rath on the 1916 OS 6-inch map. According local information, the Man-made underground passage, which has two stone-built chambers, was accessible in the mid-20th century, but was subsequently blocked up.
