Macroney Church (in Ruins)

North-of-centre in graveyard (14605). Ruin of rectangular church (17.4m E-W; 8.4m N-S), built of sandstone rubble; heavily overgrown and in poor structural repair. East gable survives to full height; central splayed window embrasure covered by segmental arch; twin lights have chamfered sandstone surrounds, and square shouldered top. Power (1932, 90) mentions second E window, which was larger, blocked and higher up in gable; this area now obscured by ivy. South wall survives to full height except 2m collapsing section (H c. 1.5m) in centre. Lintelled wall press at E end; just to W is window with single ogee-headed light, in splayed and lintelled embrasure; doorway towards W end, has embrasure covered by segmental arch, with cut-sandstone chamfered door surround, largely collapsed. North wall has 2m wide gap opposite latter doorway; splayed window embrasure, light missing, close to E end. West gable has splayed and lintelled window embrasure c. 3m above ground level, with single light obscured by overgrowth. Three corbels at W end of S wall, two on N wall, c. 1.5m above ground level, presumably supported loft. Remains of parish church of Macroney; late medieval in appearance. Reported 'in repair' in 1615, in ruins by 1774 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 317, 291). A church here listed in Papal Taxation of 1291 (ibid., 317).
