M.S.

In a grassy verge on the E side of the old road between Gort and Galway. Named ‘M.S.’ on the 1922 edition of the OS 6-inch map, this milestone (max. H 1.52m; Wth 0.31m at front, 0.46m at rear; D 0.34m) consists of a well-dressed trapezoidal-shaped limestone pillar with a narrow chamfer to the front margins. The top is heavily spalled. The inscription on the front reads: ‘12 From Gort’ but the numerals are partly obliterated by spalling. Faint traces of white paint are visible on it. On inspection in November 2021, the stone had been temporarily moved by Galway County Council into the adjacent field to the E (O’Sullivan 2021, No. 6).
