Lydiard House

Detached two-bay (two-bay deep) two-storey gable-fronted house, built 1903, on an L-shaped plan with single-bay two-storey gabled projecting end bay. Occupied, 1911. Renovated, 1997. Pitched (gable-fronted) slate roof; pitched (gabled) slate roof (end bay), clay ridge tiles, rendered buttressed central chimney stack having concrete capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Rendered walls on rendered plinth. Square-headed door opening with rendered "bas-relief" lugged surround framing timber panelled door. Square-headed window openings in camber- or segmental-headed recesses with concrete sills, and concealed dressings framing two-over-two timber sash windows. Set in landscaped grounds with rendered piers to perimeter having shallow pyramidal capping supporting flat iron gate.

A house erected on a site purchased (1903) from John Nugent Humble (1854-1929) of Cloncoskraine (see 22903109) representing an integral component of the early twentieth-century domestic built heritage of County Waterford with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the compact plan form; the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression; and the gabled roofline. Having been well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior where contemporary joinery; restrained chimneypieces; and sleek plasterwork refinements, all highlight the modest artistic potential of a house making a pleasing visual statement overlooking Dungarvan Harbour.
