Lumps Fort stands on Portsea Island as a rose garden and model village, hiding a violent life inside its soil. It began with three heavy guns in 1805, became a semaphore station above the town smog, and was rebuilt between 1859 and 1869 to guard Portsmouth Harbour. Men fired practice guns from it, paddled canoes through the Solent during the second war, and experimented beside Canoe Lake. What looks like a pleasant garden may still be a weapon bed, waiting for someone to remember how to aim it.
