Luke Dillon, 4th Baron Clonbrock, was born in Tuam, County Galway, on 10 March 1834, entering a world where local loyalty and national identity still pulled in opposite directions. He lived eighty-three years, long enough to watch empires tighten and loosen their grip, and died in 1917 as the old order began to crack. Tuam gave him life; Clonbrock gave him a name.
