Lottie Dod blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: From 1905-13 Newbury was the home of the outstanding versatile sportswoman Charlotte Dod, known as Lottie Dod (1871-1960). Ladies' tennis champion at Wimbledon in 1887 (aged 15), 1888, 1891, 1892, and 1893, and also many other British tennis tournaments. In 1899 and 1900 she played in international matches for the England hockey team, which she helped to found. In 1904 she won the British amateur golf championship at Troon, At the 1908 Summer Olympics at White City, she won the women's silver medal in archery. These were the only sports in which women competed at an international level at that time. Lottie also participated in cycling events, the St Moritz figure skating test, the Cresta Run, mountaineering, and curling. Lottie was born and lived her early life in Bebington, Cheshire. Shew moved to Edgecombe, Woodbridge in Newbury (now the site of Woodridge House) in 1905. She moved to Devon in 1913 and settled in London in 1921.
