LONG CAIRN in Ardagh

LONG CAIRN

What is recorded here

Long Cairn in Ardagh, County Antrim, is a prehistoric burial mound where the dead were laid beneath layers of earth and stone. Its length suggests a community large enough to build together and lose together. The mound still stands because nobody has removed it, not because anyone forgot it.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as LONG CAIRN. Recorded period: PREHISTORIC. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Neolithic long cairn; dates to the early to middle Neolithic period (c. 3700–3000 BCE). These tombs are significant as some of the earliest communal burial monuments in the British Isles, reflecting early social and ritual practices.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
