What is recorded here

Ten metres of buried ditch and a hundred metres of vanished mound still mark the long barrow that anchored a Bronze Age cemetery above the Frome Valley. People built bell-shaped mounds around it for centuries, perhaps returning to bury their dead beside an older presence they could no longer remember. The largest barrow preserved a later Romano-British cist burial, proving the site remained charged long after its makers disappeared. A broken northern bank and a small hollowed circle complete the composition, like a room laid out on an east-facing slope where the dead could watch the valley and the living could remember them.
The National Heritage List for England records Long barrow, three bell barrows, fancy barrow and a linear earthwork 800m north of Maiden Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
