Lochmaben Castle is a medieval ruin on a promontory above Castle Loch in Dumfries and Galloway, rebuilt by the English in the 1300s after an earlier earth and timber fortress. It changed hands between English and Scottish forces during the Wars of Independence, making it a live pawn rather than a quiet landmark. The walls still stand beside shallow black water and muddy ground, inviting imagination about the people who defended, fled or watched from that narrow ridge.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lochmaben Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Lochmaben Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Vaux family, who held the area as lords of Annandale. It is important as a strategic stronghold in the border region between Scotland and England, and it later became a royal castle under Scottish kings.
