Lochmaben Castle is a ruined stone fortress on a promontory above Castle Loch in Dumfries and Galloway, rebuilt by the English in the 1300s after an earlier earth and timber stronghold. It changed hands between English and Scottish forces during the Wars of Independence, making it a useful military position rather than a permanent home for one family. The walls still rise beside the water, suggesting that the lake and stone have watched border traffic for centuries.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lochmaben Castle as Axe Hammer (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Lochmaben Castle was built in the 13th century by the de Vesci family and later held by the Douglas family, playing a significant role in the Wars of Scottish Independence. It is remembered as the site where Robert the Bruce was crowned King of Scots in 1306.
