Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh

Lochlainn O'Raifeartaigh was born on 11 March 1933 at Kincora Road in Clontarf, County Dublin. He was the second eldest of six children, raised in a household where his father taught history and his mother spoke five languages while studying Japanese and music. The boy later ranked first in mathematics across Ireland, cycling to Rome with classmates before joining University College, Dublin. He sat through lectures by Erwin Schrödinger, then moved to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies to work under John Synge.
