Little Island Railway Station

Detached multiple-bay single-storey railway station, built 1859, having gabled projecting west bay to north elevation, flat-roofed extension to east and incorporating recessed waiting area. Pitched slate roofs with red brick chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods. Red brick walls with carved rusticated limestone quoins. Camber-arched window opening to east bay, and east and west elevations of gabled projecting bay, with red brick voussoirs and moulded red brick sills, two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to east bay, one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to projecting bay. Square-headed door openings with replacement timber panelled doors. Timber panelling to interior incorporating timber panelled ticket hatch.

The composition employs materials of superior quality along with well-executed and considered detailing.

A fine example of the quality of craftsmanship employed by the railway authority in the construction of their utilitarian structures throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century.
