Castle Coeffin holds two lives: a prehistoric fort and post-medieval cultivation remains. The hill may have served as refuge, watchpoint or ritual ground before fields cut into it later. Both layers still belong to the same place, even when their purposes no longer appear obvious.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lismore, Castle Coeffin as Cultivation Remains (post Medieval), Fort (prehistoric). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
