Lisboilcannish

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lisboilcannish is a fairy fort in County Cork, Ireland. Its twin earthen banks still circle thirty-five metres of pasture, enclosing a shallow depression where human life or fairy mirth may have swirled before memory faded. The grass rises gently toward the centre, inviting footsteps into a place that belongs to both worlds and answers to neither.
In pasture. Circular area (35m E-W; 33m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening fosse (D 0.65m). Inner bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.45m) survives SW->ESE; scarp elsewhere. Outer bank (H 0.6m) survives E->N. Interior grass-covered; rises gently towards centre; shallow circular depression (diam. 7m) inside scarp to S. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Lisboilcannish is a circular earthen ringfort, likely dating to the early medieval period, characterized by two banks and a fosse. Local tradition may associate it with fairy lore, as suggested by the name "Boilcannish," which could imply a site of supernatural or otherworldly significance.
