Leonard Abrahamson, born Lenny Abrahamson, is the Irish director who shaped Room and Normal People, but his roots lie in Rathfarnham, County Dublin. He is the son of Max Abrahamson and the namesake of his grandfather Leonard Abrahamson, a Ukrainian Jew from Odesa. His mother’s parents were Polish Jews who settled in Ireland in the 1930s. He studied at Trinity College Dublin before turning to film, carrying that Dublin and Jewish household memory into stories about love, loss and the rooms people inhabit.
