Leicester Stanhope, 5th Earl of Harrington, was born in County Dublin, Ireland, in 1784, the third son of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington, and Jane Stanhope, Countess of Harrington. He became a Cornet and Sublieutenant in the 1st Regiment of Life Guards on 1 October 1799, then exchanged into several regiments before serving in the East Indies and the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Appointed a Companion of the Bath on 14 October 1818 for his service in that conflict, he lived until 7 September 1862.
