Leacht in High Island

Leacht

What is recorded here

This small almost square leacht (1.14m x 1.06m; H 0.55m) is built against a possible mural chamber in the wall of the ecclesiastical enclosure (GA021-026022-) on High Island. It is built of small horizontal stones and some white quartz stones lie on its surface (White Marshall and Rourke 2000, 47, 49-50). (Scally 2014, 41, Fig. 4.2) Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 10 December 2015
Leacht in High Island is associated with early Christian activity on the site, likely linked to a monastic settlement. No specific saint or cure is recorded, though such leachts were often connected to local saints or used in ritual practices.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
