This stone commemorative plaque records: Shandy Hall. Here dwelt Laurence Sterne many years incumbent of Coxwold. Here he wrote Tristram Shandy, and the Sentimental Journey. Died in London in 1768 aged 55 years.
Laurence Sterne was an 18th-century English novelist and clergyman, best known for his innovative novels "Tristram Shandy" and "A Sentimental Journey," which influenced the development of literary fiction with their experimental narrative techniques and introspective style.
