Largy Church, Graveyard

Church

What is recorded here

Largy Church and Graveyard sit in a rectangular enclosure at Thornhill, County Cavan, with the building tucked into the south-western corner. They appeared on maps in 1835 and 1911, entered the monument record in 1991, then vanished from the later register in 1997. The church and graves may be no older than the early 1700s, young enough in Irish heritage terms to be overlooked. That forgetting does not empty the place; it removes only the official voice, leaving the stones to keep their own quiet account.
Listed in the SMR (1991) and classified 'Church and Graveyard'. Not included in the RMP (1997). Depicted on the 1835 and 1911 editions of the OS 6-inch map as a rectangular enclosure with a church shown in the SW corner. There is no evidence that either the church or the graveyard are pre-1700 in date. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 24 August 2012
