Kirk Yetholm, High Street, the Palace is a 17th Century cottage in the Scottish Borders, small enough to hide inside a single breath but old enough to remember several storms. The Palace sounds like a joke the village told itself, as if ordinary walls could wear a crown when nobody watched. Perhaps a child ran through that door expecting marble and finding smoke, or perhaps the name simply resisted forgetting.
