Kiln in Ballynacarriga (imokilly By., Youghal Par.)

This kiln was uncovered within the NE corner of an early medieval enclosure (CO067-086----) during excavations along the route of the N25 Youghal Bypass in 2001. It was rectangular in plan (L 2m NE-SW; Wth 0.9m; max. D 0.7m) with a flat base and straight sides, all of which were heavily oxidised. The kiln contained four fills with inclusions of heat-fractured stones, ash and charcoal. According to the excavators (Noonan et al. 2004, 24), 'no charred archaeobotanical remains were recovered from this feature, nor were any by-products of metallurgy such as slag, tuyère or areas of vitrification.' In the absence of such finds, the feature was interpreted as an oven (ibid.).
