Kiln

One of three corn-drying kilns (see CO067-087004-, CO067-087006-) uncovered in an early medieval enclosure (CO067-087----) during excavations along the N25 Youghal Bypass. This corn-drying kiln (2.2m E-W; 0.7-1.1m N-S; max. D 0.8m) had an irregularly shaped cut with rounded corners, steep sides and a flat E-W sloping base. The kiln had been partially cut on its SE side by a later corn-drying kiln (CO067-087006-) and no flue was evident. It was surrounded by a structure (CO067-087003-) which, according to the excavators (Noonan et al. 2004, 24), was considered to be a superstructure or a windbreak associated with the kiln.
