Killeenagh Burial Gd

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Killeenagh Burial Gd is a semicircular ground in County Cork where low stones still mark the dead beside ruined church walls. The slope faces southeast, giving the buried a permanent view across the valley. People may have chosen that exact edge because departure became easier when sight reached further.
In rough grazing, on ESE-facing slope with commanding view over valley to SE. Semicircular area (36m N-S; 14.9m E-W) projecting E from stone wall running N-S; enclosed to N, E and S by low bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.5m). Interior divided in half by stone wall, running E from N-S wall, with ruins of church (CO114-017002-) abutting N side of wall. Interior of church and S half of area covered by lines of low, uninscribed stones marking burials. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
