Kilkieran Holy Well

Holy well

What is recorded here

Kilkieran Holy Well is a ritual site in County Clare, Ireland. The name suggests a church connection, yet the water likely preceded any building. People may have dipped cloth into the cold flow, believing it could clean fever or sorrow. The well still belongs to the village, even when forgetfulness covers its name.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV). Currently the information for this record has not been uploaded. To access available information for research purposes please make an appointment in advance with the Archive Unit (open Fridays 10.00 am – 5.00 pm), Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, The Custom House, Dublin 1 D01W6XO or email NMarchive@housing.gov.ie.
Linked to Saint Kieran, an early Irish Christian saint associated with several holy sites in Ireland, the Kilkieran Holy Well is traditionally connected to cures for skin ailments and general healing. The well may have pre-Christian origins, with its sacred status later incorporated into Christian tradition.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
