On N shore of Lough Nakilla. Small poorly preserved medieval church (E-W; L 10.3m, Wth 4.5m) dedicated to St Flannan of Killaloe. The only surviving features are a plain doorway in N wall and the Morris family tomb in interior. The oldest part of graveyard (GA035-048002-), oval in plan, surrounds the church. To S of church is a leacht (GA035-048004-) consisting of a drystone wall (L 2.5m, H 0.5m) with a niche, set into the natural slope. A natural boulder, known as St Flannan's Bed (GA048-063----), lies c. 100m E of the graveyard and there is a holy well (GA035-048003-) to SW. A broken architectural fragment (H c. 0.25m), consisting of a robed figure carved in relief but missing its head, was found during renovations of Errislaannan Manor (pers. comm. T. Robinson; the house lies c. 170m to the ENE. It is possible that the fragment came from the church. (O'Flanagan 1927a, Vol. 3, 97-8, 101; Killanin 1954, 95;Hardiman 1846, 111-12).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
