Kenny Shiels was born in Maghera, County Derry, Ireland on 27 April 1956, the small birthplace behind a career that stretched from local Northern Irish pitches to Scottish and international management. He played for Tobermore United, Coleraine, Distillery, Larne, Ballymena United, Harland & Wolff Welders and Carrick Rangers before becoming a manager, winning the North West Senior Cup with Tobermore United in 1989–90 and later guiding Kilmarnock to the Scottish League Cup in his first season in charge.
