Juan Mackenna

In 1771, a boy named John MacKenna drew his first breath in Monaghan, Ireland, before crossing oceans to become the military engineer who helped forge Chilean independence. He carried Irish blood into Spanish armies, fought French lines in the Pyrenees, and later built roads and stores in southern Chile while navigating the jealousies of colonial governors.
