Gateway, extant 1837, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of granite ashlar piers on moulded cushion courses on plinths having corbelled stepped cornices on fluted friezes below fluted domed capping supporting cast-iron double gates with granite ashlar outer piers on moulded cushion courses on plinths having cut-granite shallow pyramidal capping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Johnstown House.

A gateway not only making a pleasing visual statement in Johnstown Road at the entrance on to the grounds of the Johnstown House estate, but also surviving as a relic of the earlier house occupied (1778) by Love Hiatt (Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland 1891, 242) and (1801) by Major Armstrong (Archer 1801, 104).
