John Zephaniah Holwell was born in County Dublin on 17 September 1711 to a timber merchant and an astrologer, beginning a life marked by chronic poverty and restless change. He abandoned banking for surgery, then sailed to Calcutta at twenty, where he later witnessed the Black Hole atrocity of 1756. His journey from a Dublin birthplace to that dark chamber shows how far a young man can travel when curiosity and desperation pull him forward.
