John Tyndall

John Tyndall was born 2 August 1820 in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, the only son of a boot-mending land agent and a disinherited woman, giving rise to the scientist who would challenge divine claims with evidence. He learned surveying and mathematics under John Conwill before joining the Ordnance Survey, where his refusal to accept poor working conditions cost him his post but sharpened the defiance that later carried him across Europe and into the mountains. The boy who nearly drowned in the Clyde river at Castlebellingham became the man who climbed alpine peaks and forced Victorian thought to abandon supernatural assumption.
