John Robert Godley was born in County Dublin, Ireland, on 29 May 1814, the eldest son of an Anglo-Irish landowner. His father held country estates in County Leitrim and County Meath, grounding the family in the soil long before Godley turned his restless mind toward distant shores. That Dublin birthplace gave him lineage, health struggles and a political edge that later carried him across the ocean to found Canterbury.
