John McKenna was born in Glaslough, County Monaghan, on 3 January 1855, the quiet starting point for the first manager of Liverpool F.C. He moved to Liverpool in the 1870s, worked a grocery store and later as a vaccination officer, then stayed beside John Houlding when Everton left Anfield. McKenna guided the new club through the Lancashire League, helped it enter the Football League, and remained with Liverpool for more than forty years.
