John FitzGibbon, 1st Earl of Clare, was born near Donnybrook, Dublin, in 1748, the son of a Catholic convert who became a wealthy lawyer. He rose through Irish politics as Attorney-General and later Lord Chancellor, becoming a militant opponent of Catholic Emancipation and an early advocate of the Act of Union. His life embodied the contradictions of Anglo-Irish power: educated at Trinity College Dublin and Christ Church, Oxford, he shaped law and policy while remaining entangled in the religious tensions that defined the era.
