John Doyle was born in Dublin in 1756, the fourth son of Charles and Elizabeth Doyle, before entering Trinity College Dublin to study law. He left that quiet path when his father died in March 1771, joining the army instead and carrying that choice through American battles, Egyptian campaigns and Guernsey governance. A boy from a Kilkenny family became a baronet and king’s secretary, yet the baronetcy vanished with his death in 1834.
