John Doyle was born in Dublin in 1756, the fourth son of Charles and Elizabeth Doyle, before entering Trinity College Dublin to study law. His father's death in March 1771 cut that scholarly path short, pushing John into the British Army instead of the courts. He carried that sudden shift through the American War of Independence and later conflicts, becoming a general, baronet, and lieutenant governor of Guernsey. The boy who nearly became a lawyer became a soldier because a room in County Kilkenny fell silent.
