John Dillon was born in Blackrock, Dublin, on 4 September 1851, the son of a former Young Irelander who died when John was young. That loss shaped him. Anne Deane, his father's niece, helped raise him after both parents gone, giving the boy a home when biology failed him. He grew into the last leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, carrying Irish nationalism through Parliament for over thirty-five years. Blackrock did not make him famous; it made him possible.
