Jocelyn Bell Burnell was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, Ireland on 15 July 1943. She grew up in a country home called Solitude, reading her father's astronomy books and visiting the nearby Armagh Observatory. Staff there encouraged her to pursue astronomy, a spark that eventually led her to discover pulsars during her doctorate work in 1967.
