James Stephens Barracks

Detached four-bay two-storey house, built 1852. Now in use as offices. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks on limestone ashlar plinths, and cast-iron rainwater goods on cut-limestone eaves. Coursed tooled dressed limestone walls with tooled cut-limestone quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut-limestone sills, tooled cut-limestone keystones, and six-over-six timber sash windows. Elliptical-headed door opening with tooled cut-limestone voussoirs, tongue-and-groove timber panelled door having fixed-pane timber sidelights, and fanlight. Set back from road in grounds shared with James Stephens (Kilkenny City) Military Barracks.

Retaining the original form and massing together with most of the historic fabric, thereby maintaining the early character of the site a well-composed Classically-detailed modest-scale house displaying expert stone masonry in the construction in locally-sourced County Kilkenny limestone makes a positive contribution to the group and setting values of the James Stephens (Kilkenny City) Military Barracks complex.
