This black commemorative plaque records: In this ancient hostelry, James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, passed his last few hours of his life previous to his execution Wed. 15th October 1651.
James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby, was a prominent Royalist leader during the English Civil War; he is remembered for his support of Charles I and his execution by Parliamentarians in 1651 as a consequence of his political and military opposition to the Commonwealth.
