James Butler, 3rd Marquess of Ormonde, was born at Kilkenny Castle on 5 October 1844. He lived there until his death in 1919, spending his whole life inside the same stone walls that first held him. The castle gave birth to a marquess and kept him until the end, completing a circle most people never escape.
