Dunyvaig Castle stands on Islay as a medieval castle possibly built over a prehistoric dun, layering centuries of human ambition into one rocky outline. Dunyvaig Castle on Islay was built by the Macleans of Lochbuie in the 16th century and later held by the Macdonalds of Dunnyveg, important Clan leaders in the Western Isles. The castle is remembered for its strategic role in the power struggles of the Scottish Highlands and its association with the Jacobite uprisings.
