Crannog is the Irish word for an artificial island, usually built in shallow lake water with soil, stone and wood. The name Crannog therefore describes the making of the place rather than a unique identity. In County Derry, water, bog and lake edge gave people room to build small raised lands for housing, herding or ritual. The uncertain label preserves that possibility instead of inventing a false certainty.

The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as ISLAND, possibly CRANNOG. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
