Crannog Ballynewry rose from the Armagh water as a made island, perhaps nothing more than soil, reed and rope twisted into a place people could call their own. It may have begun as a small wetland home, a kitchen, a shelter or a boundary marker dressed up as land. The name still carries that act of invention, because Ballynewry sounds like a town when it may have been only a heap of earth above the lake.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as ISLAND, possibly CRANNOG: BALLYNEWRY. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
