Inscribed stone

What is recorded here

John Foorde, mayor in 1693, left a skull and crossbones on a tablet inside St. John's Church, a stark reminder that civic pride still answers to death. The church rebuilt in 1763, displacing the stone into the graveyard where it remains. That movement from sacred hall to open soil changed its voice: no longer a warning hung above worship, it became a marker waiting in the dark.
17th century plaque / wall memorial that was originally located inside St. John's Church (LI005-017041-) but later moved to the graveyard (LI005-017042-), described in the Urban Survey (Bradley et. al. 1989, 325-6) as following; 'Westropp (1904-5, 358) notes that before the rebuilding of [St. John's Church] 1763 there was a tablet (probably a wall memorial) to John Foorde, Esqr. Mayor 1693, skull and crossbones (Fogerty 1913, 372). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 22 November 2019
