Grave Yd.

Graveyard belonging to St. John's Church (LI005-017015-) in Limerick City described in the Urban Survey of Limerick (Bradley et. al. 1989, 325-6) as following; 'Situated in the south end of the Irish town this is listed among the churches of Limerick in the inquisition of 1201-2 (MacCaffrey 1907, 27, 28). Westropp (1904-5, 358) notes that before the rebuilding of 1763 there was a monument to Thomas and Johanna Rice dated 1622 and a tablet (probably a wall memorial) to John Foorde, Mayor 1693 (now in the graveyard, see Mems Dead viii (1910-12), 372). In addition there was a panel, probably from a table tomb with the symbols of the passion and a second slab with a marginal inscription to "Philip son of Maurice with a shoe and an axe (Mems Dead viii (1910-12), 376-7). The enclosing wall of the graveyard has a plaque with an inscription of 1650 recording money given by John Creagh, David Rochfort and James Bousfield for the "outworks" of the city'. A graveyard (approx. dims. 28m N-S x 41m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall mainly lies to the S of St. John's Church. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 25 July 2019
