What is recorded here
Kilcar’s inscribed stone stands wedge-shaped in a Donegal field fence, its broad south face marked by random narrow grooves that local story claims are ancient. The boulder taps a point toward the northeast like a finger pressing through earth, while the grassed laneway beside it leads past church and graveyard. Anyone walking that narrow path must wonder whether the scores recorded names, counted years or simply caught chisels during some forgotten fitting. The stone keeps that uncertainty intact, offering no explanation except its own steady presence at the edge of the village.
Incorporated into a field fence, bordering the N side of a grassed-over laneway leading to Kilcar church (DG096-010005-) and graveyard (DG096-010007-).
This consists of an irregular-shaped, earth-fast boulder (exposed L 1.68m; Wth. 0.22; max. H 1.1m), wedge shaped in section, aligned NE-SW, tapering to a point at the higher NE side. On the broad S-facing side of the stone there are a number of random narrow grooves or scores, following no discernible pattern, which according to Lacy (1983, 277, no. 1577) ‘are believed locally to be of ancient origin.’

Likely dating to the early Christian period, the inscription may represent a memorial or territorial marker, possibly associated with the local monastic or ecclesiastical site at Kilcar. Such stones often carried ogham or Latin inscriptions linked to personal names or land divisions.
